# Creating your account and signing in

This article covers registering, setting up two-factor authentication, and what to do if you lose access to your authenticator app.

## Registering

1. Go to [clarify.net.au](https://clarify.net.au) and choose **Log in**, then follow the link to register, or open an invite email if a teammate added you.
2. Enter your email address and choose a password.
3. Confirm your email using the link we send you.

## Two-factor authentication is required

Because Clarify handles sensitive material, every account must use two-factor authentication (2FA). The first time you sign in you'll be asked to set it up:

1. Install an authenticator app on your phone if you don't have one. Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, and Authy all work.
2. Scan the QR code shown on screen with the app.
3. Enter the 6-digit code from the app to confirm.
4. **Save your recovery codes somewhere safe.** These are shown once. Each code lets you sign in one time if you ever lose your phone.

After setup, signing in takes your password plus the current 6-digit code from your authenticator app. Tick **Remember this machine** on a trusted computer to skip the code on that device. That works by storing a cookie in that browser for 14 days; leave the box unticked on shared or public computers. Every cookie Clarify sets is listed in the [cookie policy](https://clarify.net.au/cookies).

## Lost your authenticator?

On the 2FA screen, choose **log in with a recovery code** and enter one of your saved recovery codes. Each code works once. Once you're in, go to [your account settings](https://clarify.net.au/Account/Manage/TwoFactorAuthentication) to set up a new authenticator app and generate fresh recovery codes.

Running low on codes? The 2FA settings page warns you when you have three or fewer left. Use **Reset recovery codes** to generate a new set at any time.

## If you're completely locked out

Contact [support@clarify.net.au](mailto:support@clarify.net.au) from the email address on your account and we'll help you recover access.
