Muting a commenter

Some accounts aren't worth a case or a block. They're just a persistent nuisance who turns up on every post. Muting is for them. While an account is muted, any new comment they make is hidden automatically, so they keep shouting into a room nobody can hear. It's reversible, it's time-bound, and it works on every platform.

Muting an account

From the Account Tracker, open the account and use the Mute account dropdown. Pick how long:

  • For 1 day
  • For 1 week
  • For 1 month
  • Permanently

That's it. From then on, each comment they post is hidden the moment Clarify syncs it. When a timed mute runs out, they're heard again automatically, with no need to remember to switch it back on.

What muting does (and doesn't do)

  • It hides their new comments only. Muting is forward-looking. It doesn't touch comments they've already made. If you also want their existing comments gone, hide those from the Social Stream.
  • Hidden, not blocked. Their comments are hidden the same way any hidden comment is: removed from public view but still visible to them and their friends, so they can't tell they've been muted. Nothing is deleted.
  • It works everywhere. Unlike a Facebook block, muting is managed inside Clarify, so it applies on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Threads alike.
  • Muted comments are reversible. Anything hidden by a mute shows up in the Auto-hidden queue, where you can un-hide individual comments.

Finding and unmuting

The Account Tracker has a Muted filter that lists everyone currently muted, with a badge on each showing whether they're muted for a set period or indefinitely. To lift a mute early, open the account and click Unmute. New comments stop being hidden straight away; anything already hidden stays hidden until you restore it from the Auto-hidden queue.

Mute compared with Block

They're different tools:

  • Mute (this page) hides their comments, for a chosen duration, on any platform, and is fully reversible. Best for run-of-the-mill nuisance accounts.
  • Block is Facebook's own block, which stops the account interacting with your Page entirely. It's permanent until you unblock, and it only works on Facebook (Instagram, TikTok and Threads don't offer it). Best for someone you want gone for good. You'll find it on the same account profile, just below the mute control.
